Kenya is set to enhance its military cooperation with South Korea, focusing on shipbuilding, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity to promote regional peace and stability.
During the Seoul Defence Dialogue, Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya emphasized the strengthening partnership between Kenya and South Korea.
Tuya, who is in Seoul for high-level discussions with South Korean officials, praised South Korea’s crucial role in bolstering Kenya’s defense capabilities, particularly in maritime security and peacekeeping efforts.
She highlighted the importance of this collaboration for securing essential maritime trade routes and addressing mutual security threats such as piracy and terrorism in the Indian Ocean.
This development follows a recent agreement made during President William Ruto’s state visit to the USA in May.
Under this agreement, Kenya is set to receive 16 US-manufactured helicopters to enhance its regional peacekeeping efforts.
These helicopters are expected to arrive between late 2024 and summer 2025.
Additionally, the USA has committed to accelerating the expansion of the Manda Bay Airfield in Kenya.
This expansion will include a new 10,000-foot runway, which will improve the infrastructure necessary for increased operations against the terrorist group al-Shabaab.
