Kenyans Rally Around Citizen TV Anchors Amid Phone Number Leaks

After anonymous individuals leaked the phone numbers of several Citizen TV news anchors online, Kenyans responded unexpectedly by showing solidarity with them.

This incident follows a disturbing trend where the phone numbers of nearly every prominent Kenyan figure, including the President, have been published online, under the guise of a mischievous trend dubbed ‘Salimia yeye’, encouraging people to call or text them.

However, instead of engaging in hostile interactions as intended, many who obtained the contact details chose to express admiration and gratitude towards the targeted journalists.

They offered words of encouragement and appreciation for their dedication to journalism and service to the nation.

This surprising display of support was notably directed towards figures like Mashirima Kapombe, Yvonne Okwara, and Linus Kaikai from Royal Media Services.

Linus Kaikai, reacting to the overwhelming positive response, remarked, “My fellow Kenyans, I am deeply moved by your messages of love, kindness, and encouragement. This was certainly not the expected outcome of that early morning ‘brief’.”

He also expressed gratitude for the numerous calls he received, highlighting the opportunity to connect with fellow citizens.

Mashirima Kapombe similarly conveyed her appreciation, stating, “Thank you for all the kind and heartwarming messages.

You all give me hope that Kenya will prevail, united across generations and backgrounds. God bless you and our beloved country.”

Yvonne Okwara echoed their sentiments, thanking Kenyans for their unexpected ‘greetings’ and expressing her pleasure in hearing from so many supporters.

Amidst ongoing anti-media sentiments, including the emergence of ‘Occupy Citizen’ posters online, the media community has raised concerns about continued attacks and even abductions targeting Kenyan journalists.
