Kithure Kindiki Undergoes Initial Vetting For Interior Cabinet Secretary Role

Kithure Kindiki, nominated for the role of Interior Cabinet Secretary, was the first to be vetted by the National Assembly Appointments Committee on Wednesday.

The session, chaired by Speaker Moses Wetangula, focused on Kindiki’s 21-month tenure, during which he was dismissed from his previous position.

During the vetting, Kindiki was questioned about various security issues, including alleged lapses and accusations of extrajudicial killings and abuse of power.

Kindiki defended his record, stating that significant security improvements had been made since his appointment in October 2022.

He cited a reduction in terror attacks and banditry in northern Kenya and Lamu as evidence of his effectiveness.

However, Minority Leader Junet Mohammed raised concerns about the use of excessive force by police during the Azimio La Umoja demonstrations and protests against the Anti-Finance Bill.

Kindiki responded by emphasizing that while the police had acted to restore order, the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) should handle any misconduct by officers.

Kindiki also addressed recent incidents involving police brutality, including the deaths of protesters.

He asserted that individual decisions on the use of force are not subject to oversight by the Inspector General, but stressed that accountability measures are in place.

The nominee acknowledged criticisms regarding his tenure, including concerns about police handling of protests and incidents like the Kware and Shakahola massacres.

He pledged to address these issues by implementing proposed reforms and enhancing the National Government Administration Officers and Nyumba Kumi initiatives.

Kindiki highlighted his efforts to modernize the police force through the Police Equipment Modernization (PEM) program, which has involved a significant financial investment.

He assured the committee of his commitment to further reforms and improving security services if reappointed.

The vetting continues as MPs deliberate on Kindiki’s suitability for the position.
