The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a notice to First Community Bank, seeking to recover KSh 623,389,105 in outstanding taxes from former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
According to an official document dated October 12, 2026, the tax agency directed the bank to remit any funds held in accounts belonging to Sonko to settle his outstanding tax obligations.
The notice was signed by Njoroge Muiruri, the Debt Enforcement Manager in KRA’s Debt, Refunds and Ledger Management Division.
Why Has KRA Issued the Notice?
KRA invoked Section 42 of the Tax Procedures Act, 2015, which allows the authority to appoint a third party, including a bank, as an agent to recover unpaid taxes from a taxpayer.
Under the provision, First Community Bank is required to surrender any money it holds for Sonko, owes him or is authorised to pay to him, up to the amount demanded by the tax authority.
The notice was also sent directly to Sonko through the postal address and email contact recorded in KRA’s records.
In the document, Muiruri invoked the law to formally appoint the bank as the taxpayer’s agent and instructed it to remit KSh 623,389,105 to the authority.

KRA stated that the outstanding liability relates to individual income tax covering the period between January 2015 and December 2019.
The amount demanded comprises three components:
-
Principal tax: KSh 308,916,928
-
Penalties: KSh 15,756,912
-
Accumulated interest: KSh 298,715,265
The authority further explained that if the bank makes only a partial payment, the agency notice will remain in force until the entire debt is recovered.

KRA also warned that, under Section 42(13) of the Tax Procedures Act, a bank that fails to comply with the notice without reasonable cause may become personally liable for the amount specified.
First Community Bank was directed to make the payment using a valid, system-generated payment slip and submit a return to KRA disclosing any funds held on Sonko’s behalf.
What Is Mike Sonko’s Net Worth?
The former Nairobi governor has previously estimated his net worth at more than KSh 32 billion.
Sonko attributed his wealth to a portfolio of private business ventures, which he said he established before and during his involvement in politics.
