Livestock Owners Suffer Major Losses Due To Black Quarter Disease In Migori County

Livestock farmers in Winjo, located in Muhuru ward of Nyatike, Migori County, have been hit hard by an outbreak of Black Quarter disease, which has resulted in the loss of 27 cows.

Assistant Chief Benard Nyitambe from the Winjo sub-location reported that the deaths occurred between Friday of last week and Wednesday of this week.

He noted that many other cattle are in critical condition as the disease spreads through the area.

“The government needs to take urgent action to support these struggling farmers before they lose more animals,” Mr. Nyitambe emphasized.

The assistant chief mentioned that the local authorities have reached out to the appropriate department for help, but veterinary officers have yet to respond.

He urged the government to act quickly, as the livelihoods of many in the area are at stake.

The residents primarily rely on livestock farming, and a disease outbreak like this could have devastating consequences if not addressed swiftly.

Notably, a similar outbreak of Black Quarter disease struck the same region in January 2024, leading to significant cattle losses.

This new outbreak has heightened concerns among farmers, who fear a repeat of the previous tragedy without immediate intervention.
