A tragic incident unfolded in Melbourne’s north-east as a man lost his life after falling from a hot-air balloon early Monday morning.
Emergency services responded to the scene on Albert Street in Preston around 7:30 am, where the man’s body was discovered.
As authorities commenced their investigation, the road between Wood Street and Murray Road was closed in both directions, urging motorists to seek alternative routes.
While details surrounding the incident were being pieced together through discussions with balloon occupants and witnesses, law enforcement affirmed that the death was not considered suspicious.
They announced their intention to compile a comprehensive report for the coroner’s office.
Reports indicate that the hot-air balloon safely landed at Yarra Bend Park.
In response to the tragedy, counseling services were extended to the other passengers, highlighting the emotional toll of the event.
Izabella Staskowski, a reporter from the Today Show, described the scene as “confronting and shocking,” particularly given the suburban setting of Albert Street, characterized by numerous residential properties.
Following requests for comments, the National Commercial Hot Air Ballooning Industry and the Australian Ballooning Federation expressed their condolences to the bereaved family.
They emphasized the safety measures typically incorporated into hot air balloon designs to prevent accidents, expressing solidarity with the affected passengers and the pilot.
The hot-air balloon had departed from CT Barling Reserve in Reservoir at 7 am, with the unfortunate incident occurring shortly after takeoff.
Investigations into the matter are being conducted by multiple agencies, including WorkSafe Victoria, the Air Transport Safety Bureau, and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.
