Two Texan men had their lives changed by a dream that led them to discover they were brothers.
ABC13 captured their emotional reunion on a Sunday.
These two men met for the very first time, even though they lived less than three hours apart.
Phuong Doan had recently moved to the Katy area, not far from where his half-brother Juan Lewis had gone to high school.
Strangely, they had no idea about each other until now.
Their reunion on that Sunday morning was filled with tears as these two brothers finally embraced, ending a life of separation.
“Shocked, you know? It feels like a part of me has been missing, and now I’m connected with my brother, and I look at him, and I see my dad,” expressed Lewis.
Doan came to the United States from Vietnam in the 1990s and had been searching for his American family for half a century.
All he knew was that his father was an American who served in the military.
“I can’t talk right now. I’m still pretty emotional,” Doan shared.
Their father, Melvin Lewis, an Army veteran, passed away in 1988.
Juan, an Air Force veteran, revealed that their dad had served a tour in Vietnam but never talked about it; it was considered a sensitive topic.
“When I was in the hospital, in the ICU. I started having weird dreams that I had a younger brother,” Lewis recalled.
While battling COVID, he had a dream that he didn’t realize would change his life.
Eventually, he decided to explore his family tree and, to his amazement, discovered that he had a half-brother.
“When I called him, I saw my dad and my brother, and I knew.
I didn’t need any DNA then, that’s my brother,” Lewis said.
Fifty years have passed, but this family is determined to make up for the lost time.
These two men, originally from opposite sides of the world, are now eager to get to know each other and build the connection that only brothers can share.
