Police in Rongo Sub-County are on the hunt for 37-year-old Geoffrey Agunga, who is accused of murdering his biological father, Agunga Riwa, in Nyangau village, Migori County.
The motive behind the violent attack remains unclear, but family members suggest it may be connected to a sh. 200,000 loan that Geoffrey gave to his sister several months ago.
According to Jason Ouma, the deceased’s son, tensions had been escalating within the family for weeks, primarily stemming from Geoffrey’s frustration over his sister’s failure to repay the loan he extended while he was working in Qatar.
Ouma explained that prior to the attack, Geoffrey confronted their mother about the money.
After receiving no satisfactory answers, he sought out his father, who was returning home at the time, and attacked him.
Witness Maurice Otieno reported seeing the confrontation unfold, stating that Geoffrey engaged in a brief discussion with his father before striking him with a machete.
“I was working at Mzee Agunga’s home when Geoffrey arrived. I saw them talking, and suddenly he struck his father with a panga, delivering four severe blows to his forehead, face, shoulder, and arm,” Otieno recounted.
Following the brutal attack, the victim was rushed to Rongo Sub-County Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Rongo Sub-County Police Commander Salim Fundi confirmed that an investigation is underway, and efforts to apprehend Geoffrey are ongoing, as he remains at large.
Authorities have urged anyone with information about Geoffrey’s whereabouts to come forward, as the community grapples with the shocking incident that has left them reeling.
The police are determined to resolve the case and ensure justice for Agunga Riwa and his family.
