Maseno University Student Nursing Gunshot Injury In JOOTHR

William Mayange

A Maseno University student was Tuesday shot by police during the protest against the killing of a fellow student on Monday.

The 22-year-old was admitted to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTHR).

The hospital administrator Alex Ochieng said the student was referred to the facility after being shot by police in the elbow.

Ochieng said that the other five patients who suffered deep cut wounds during the demonstration were treated and discharged.

On Monday a third-year student at Maseno University was shot dead by police during the nationwide anti-government protests by the Azimio coalition in Kisumu’s Maseno area.

Police said William Mayange was among a group of students who had joined the Azimio protests which later turned violent after the protesters invaded a supermarket in Maseno town.

The student was shot in the neck and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Coptic hospital where he had been rushed.

Other students denied the claims by police of raiding the supermarket.

Police said the students overpowered the security officers who had run out of teargas canisters.

As a result, police say the student was shot in the neck after the officers started firing live bullets to repulse the intruders who had allegedly invaded the supermarket.

Kisumu governor called for a quick investigation as he condemned police for using excessive force.

The lobby organizations have since condemned the police conduct in Monday’s protest.
