On Monday, August 26, 2024, lecturers at Moi University began an industrial action, citing severe issues within the institution as the catalyst for their strike.
The academic staff, led by Richard Okero, Chairman of the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) Moi University chapter,
And national trustee Jane Michael, are demanding the dissolution of the university’s council, alleging mismanagement.
The lecturers’ grievances include:
Unpaid salaries since July 2024.
Unsettled loans and deductions for the past three years.
Unpaid pensions (both employee and employer contributions) for the past three years.
Unpaid National Social Security Fund (NSSF) contributions.
Moi University’s failure to implement the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) scale, resulting in outdated salaries and outstanding arrears.
Unpaid student supervision allowances for industrial attachment and teaching practice, despite these fees being collected separately from tuition.
The lecturers are also urging the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate the alleged misappropriation of over Ksh.1 billion linked to a new funding model.
Despite the university council, led by Chairman Dr. Humphrey Njuguna, asserting that efforts are underway to secure government funds to address salary and other financial issues.
The lecturers have declared they will not return to work until their demands are met.
The council noted that they are in discussions with the Ministry of Education to resolve the budget shortfall impacting the 2024/2025 financial year.
In response, Vice Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kosgey announced that funding has been secured, and July salaries are expected to be processed starting Tuesday, August 27.
He appealed to the striking lecturers to end their action.
Nevertheless, as of Monday, the strike continues, with lecturers insisting on the disbandment of the University Council and a thorough investigation into alleged financial mismanagement.
The ongoing issues have contributed to a decline in the university’s conditions, affecting both staff and students, who face challenges such as inadequate accommodation.
