Israeli Minister Proposes Synagogue Construction At Sensitive Jerusalem Location

On Monday, August 26, 2024, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir ignited controversy with remarks about the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem.

During an interview with Army Radio, Ben Gvir, known for his far-right stance, stated that if it were up to him.

He would build a synagogue at the contentious site, which is also revered by Jews as the Temple Mount.

Ben Gvir, who has frequently defied the government’s ban on Jewish prayer at the Al-Aqsa compound, went on to say he would also place an Israeli flag on the site if possible.

He confirmed his willingness to build a synagogue when pressed by the interviewer, despite the current restrictions prohibiting Jewish prayer and religious symbols at the site.

The Al-Aqsa compound, located in Israeli-annexed East Jerusalem, is the third holiest site in Islam and a significant symbol of Palestinian identity.

For Jews, it is the location of the former Second Temple, destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.

The site is managed by Jordan, while Israeli security forces control access.

Ben Gvir’s comments come amid rising tensions, as hardline nationalists increasingly challenge the status quo, which permits non-Muslim visits but forbids prayer.

This has led to frequent clashes with Palestinians, who view such actions as provocations.

In response, Israeli officials have criticized Ben Gvir’s statements.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office emphasized that there will be no changes to the current policy.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant labeled Ben Gvir’s remarks as dangerous and irresponsible, while Palestinian spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh and Hamas condemned the statements, calling for protection of the holy sites.

Earlier this month, Ben Gvir drew criticism for praying at the Al-Aqsa compound, a move that was met with disapproval from several prominent Israeli rabbis.

His recent remarks further highlight ongoing tensions and opposition to any ceasefire in the Gaza conflict.
