Night Guard Killed During Shop Break-In In Machakos

A 68-year-old night guard was killed during a suspected break-in at Kinyau Market in Kathiani, Machakos County, in the early hours of Thursday.

James Ndolo Muia, who worked as a night guard at Uamani Shop in the market, was found dead at around 6:50am by a shopkeeper who had arrived to open his business.

Police officers visited the scene and found Muia’s body lying on the ground with blood oozing from his head.

Police established that the assailants had broken into three shops at the market.

A bar attendant told investigators that at around 4am she heard screams but assumed they were from quarry loaders passing nearby and went back to sleep.

Another night guard told police that he had been working with Muia the previous evening. He said Muia complained of a severe headache and left the workplace at around 11pm to go and sleep.

He said he only became aware of the incident at around 7am when police officers arrived at his home to question him.

The deceased had deep cuts on the forehead, left eye and right wrist, according to the police report.

The scene was photographed and documented before the body was moved to Machakos Funeral Home mortuary, pending an autopsy.

The Kathiani Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer is leading investigations into the killing and the break-ins.
