One miner has died and four others sustained injuries after a section of a mine collapsed on them in Karosi area, Kuria West, Migori County.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 5, 2026, while the workers were operating inside the mine, which is approximately 100 metres deep.
Police said the mine is located on a parcel of land operated by a businessman who reported the incident to officers at Kehancha Police Station.
Witnesses said part of the mine wall suddenly collapsed, burying four workers under debris.
Other workers managed to rescue their colleagues and rushed them to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Those injured were reported to be in stable condition.
They were initially treated at Kurutyange Hospital before being referred to Migori County Referral Hospital for further medical attention.
However, a 60-year-old miner identified as Chacha, alias Kimeme Kuria, succumbed to injuries sustained in the collapse.
His body was removed to the Kehancha Sub-County Hospital mortuary, where it was preserved pending a post-mortem examination.
Police have recorded the incident as a death-in-the-mine report as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collapse continue.
Such tragedies have been on the rise amid efforts to address the trend. Officials have been calling on the miners to ensure their safety is paramount before they venture into the shafts.
Police statistics show up to three deaths happen weekly at the sites.
