One-Year-Old Girl Drowns In Bucket In Mathira, Nyeri County

A one-year-old girl drowned after she was found submerged in a bucket of water inside her family home in Ndima Kanini Village, Mathira East, Nyeri County.

The girl was reportedly left alone in the house by her 19-year-old mother on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.

The mother, who lives with her own mother, had gone to visit a cousin who lives approximately 300 metres from their home.

She spent about 10 minutes there before returning home and finding the child submerged in a 20-litre blue bucket that was approximately half full of water.

She immediately removed the child from the bucket and alerted neighbours. The girl was rushed to Kiangai Health Centre, where she was pronounced dead on arrival by a clinical officer.

Police officers from Kiaruhiu Police Station, accompanied by DCI Mathira East and Scene of Crime officers, visited the scene and documented the incident.

The body was subsequently removed to Karatina Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits post-mortem examination.

Police established that the child was originally from Mathira East Sub-County, under the jurisdiction of Kiaruhiu Police Station, although the incident occurred in Ndima Kanini, which falls under Kiangai Police Post.

And a three-year-old girl died after being trapped in a house that was destroyed by fire in Njuri Village, Tharaka Nithi County.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, police said, Police officers visited the scene.

They established that the two-bedroom semi-permanent house, owned by 75-year-old Sarah Maregu, had been completely destroyed by the fire, with nothing salvaged.

The child was trapped inside the house during the fire and died.

Police processed the scene before removing the body to Chuka Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination.

The cause of the fire had not been established, and investigations are ongoing.
