Ugandan security forces have surrounded the residences of key opposition figures in anticipation of an upcoming protest in the capital, Kampala.
Veteran opposition leader Kizza Besigye and former pop star turned politician Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, both report being under house arrest as security forces prevent them from leaving their homes.
In a social media post, Kyagulanyi expressed determination despite the blockade, stating, “The cowardly military and police have surrounded our home and put us under house arrest, but the protest is on.”
Besigye shared images of security officers obstructing the entrance to his home, captioning them with resolve, “Barricaded at home by the cowards! No turning back; we deserve better.”

The opposition leaders are urging fellow Ugandans to proceed with the planned protest on Thursday, advocating for government action to repair deteriorating roads.
The police, however, have declared their intent to thwart the demonstrations, asserting that protests organized by these politicians “have never been peaceful” and would disrupt an ongoing key summit in the capital.
The 19th Non-Aligned Movement summit, attended by around 4,000 delegates, is currently taking place in Kampala.
