A police officer in Kakamega County has been detained following an altercation with a tuk-tuk crew on the Kakamega-Kisumu Road.
Police Constable Nathan Bett, who was assigned to oversee order at the court premises, reportedly discharged his Ceska pistol during the incident.
The incident unfolded when Constable Bett, who had returned his Ceska pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition, attempted to stop a tuk-tuk crew near the Kakamega Police Station gate.
According to Bett, the tuk-tuk crew refused to stop, leading to a confrontation.
He claimed the crew had hostile intentions and fired his weapon in self-defense.
Initial investigations indicate that Bett fired two rounds, injuring a 28-year-old individual.
The victim sustained gunshot wounds to the left shoulder and had another bullet penetrate through his right collarbone and exit through the left collarbone.
He was first taken to Mukumu Dispensary and later referred to Oasis Multispecialty Hospital in Kakamega for further treatment.
Constable Bett has been taken into custody and faces charges of attempted murder as the investigation continues.
The police report noted that the officer’s actions are under review, and additional measures will be taken regarding the issuance of firearms.
“The officer has been arrested and is in custody for attempted murder. Further actions will be pursued regarding the handling of the Ceska pistol,” the report stated.
