Police are investigating the ownership of an AK47 rifle that was recovered from a scene of a robbery in Korogocho slums, Nairobi.

The rifle serial number KP 60034486 loaded with nine rounds of 7.62mm special was recovered at the scene of a robbery and kept as an exhibit.

The weapon belongs to Kenya police and it is not clear how it was recovered at the scene in the Sunday morning incident.

Two locals had reported to police that they were attacked by a three-man gang, one armed with an AK47 rifle and the rest with crude weapons while at their shops.

During the incident one was robbed of Sh15,000 and the other Sh28,000, A71 Samsung mobile phone, and five wristwatches.

Another shop owner was stabbed severally when he resisted an attempt by the robbers to break into his shop, police said.

He was rescued and rushed to Jumuia Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition.

It was during the police visit to the scene that the rifle was found in one of the shops.

It is suspected part of the gang members are police officers.

A team of detectives is investigating the incident.

Cases, where police are involved in robberies, have been on the rise amid calls to address the trend.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei termed the cases isolated and that they are being addressed internally.

He said detectives are investigating the recovery of the weapon in the Korogocho case.

We will know who had it and at what time. It is clear the weapon belongs to Kenya Police,” he said.
