Raila Odinga, leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition party, has issued an apology for the chaos that occurred during the Azimio meeting in Nairobi.
In his statement, Raila expressed regret for the unfortunate events and offered unreserved apologies to journalists and leaders affected by the turmoil.
He mentioned that the coalition would review the situation and address the security lapses that led to the incident.
The chaos erupted when a group of youths stormed the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation venue.
Raila pointed out that while some of the youths are known, many remain unidentified by the parties involved.
“The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF), the venue of yesterday’s meeting, has successfully hosted important events at more defining moments in the country, without any such ugly incidents,” Raila said.
The planned Azimio post-Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting in Nairobi turned chaotic on Wednesday.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s speech was disrupted, and attendees were forcibly removed from the venue.
The intruders also targeted journalists covering the event, forcefully ejecting them from the premises.
Following the disruption, Azimio suspended the address but later issued a statement outlining resolutions from the PG meeting. Key among these was the coalition’s decision not to participate in the proposed broad-based government suggested by President William Ruto in response to the nationwide demonstrations.
Additionally, Azimio called for the immediate arrest of rogue police officers involved in the injuries, deaths, and kidnappings of peaceful Kenyan protesters since the Finance Bill demonstrations began on June 18, 2024.
