Raila Odinga, a prominent opposition leader, has officially declared his interest in becoming the chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).
He made this announcement during a media briefing, mentioning that he had consulted extensively before making this decision.
“I am prepared to serve this continent if its leadership desires my assistance.
I am willing to pursue the chairmanship of the African Union,” stated Odinga.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in African nations, particularly the trend of young Africans seeking opportunities abroad due to challenging conditions at home, Odinga emphasized the need for change.

He expressed his determination to leverage the potential of Africa, aiming to elevate the continent to economic prominence if elected.
“As a Pan-Africanist, I strongly believe that Africa deserves better than its current standing. We must harness our resources for rapid socio-economic progress,” he emphasized.
Drawing on his experience as the AU special envoy for infrastructure development in Africa from 2018 to 2023, Odinga highlighted his understanding of the continent’s socio-economic landscape, considering it a valuable asset for the position he seeks.
Odinga also mentioned discussions with former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, present at the briefing, to garner support from leaders across the continent.
Obasanjo expressed support for East Africa’s claim to the AUC chairpersonship.
The current chairperson, Moussa Faki from Chad, will complete his second term next year, leaving the position open for election.
The role of the AUC chairperson is pivotal, serving as the chief executive officer, legal representative, and chief accounting officer of the AU Commission.
Elected for a renewable four-year term, their responsibilities include overseeing administration and finances, promoting AU objectives, coordinating with stakeholders, managing staff, and serving as a depository for AU treaties and legal instruments.
