Employee Faces Charges For Fake School Certificate

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested a person working at the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) on suspicion of using a fake academic certificate to get the job.

They found out that Javason Kimemia Maina had a forged certificate from Kimuri Secondary School that helped him get hired.

EACC then suggested to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to charge Maina with fraud for getting about Sh.293,240 in salaries, along with forgery and using a false document.

The DPP agreed, and Maina had to go to the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.

“He was let out on a bond of Sh.700,000, with a surety of the same amount or a cash bail of Sh.400,000,” mentioned EACC.

The case will be talked about in court on February 26, 2024.

This happens as authorities are actively targeting public workers who get their jobs using fake certificates.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) reported on February 13 that they found 2,067 cases of forgery in public institutions.

Most of these cases involve people in the Ministry of Interior, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), and the Geothermal Development Corporation, which is under the Ministry of Energy.

The report has been given to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for further steps.

“EACC stated that they’ll take action against any leader of a government agency found trying to protect those who cheated with their academic qualifications.”
