Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja pledged to fully sponsor the education of Edna Mwango, a 23-year-old medical student in Kisii who was on the brink of dropping out due to financial struggles.
Mwango is pursuing orthopedic and trauma medicine.
She has been juggling her studies during the day while hawking at night to make ends meet.
This could be a reflection of many such students who are struggling with life in universities.
Her inspiring yet heartbreaking story of resilience captured public attention, highlighting the plight of many struggling students in Kenya.
Upon learning about her situation, Sakaja announced that his administration would cover her tuition fees and upkeep until she completes her studies.
“I will sponsor her studies and her upkeep. She is doing everything she can to stay in school.
Edna’s determination is admirable, and we will ensure she achieves her dream of becoming a doctor,” Sakaja confirmed.
Mwango has been struggling to stay in school while living with her grandmother and unable to afford tuition fees.
“I don’t have any other way to take care of my needs.
That is why I am a hawker at night and a student during the day,” she said painfully.
With her burden lifted, Mwango can now focus entirely on her dream.
