School Feeding Program Budget Cut By Sh.2.3 Billion

The Education Ministry informed the National Assembly committee on implementation that the National Treasury reduced the school feeding program budget by sh.2.3 billion.

During the committee session chaired by Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala, Education PS Belio Kipsang disclosed the budget cuts on Tuesday.

He stated that while the school feeding program had previously received additional budgetary allocations, there was a reduction in the 2024-2025 Financial Year, with an allocation of sh.3 billion.

Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba raised concerns about the budget reduction and its potential impact on food rationing for learners.

The Ministry of Education assured the committee that ongoing discussions with the Treasury aimed to review the allocation under the supplementary budget.

PS Belio emphasized that there were no plans to withdraw food benefits from learners.

The school feeding program currently supports 2.6 million children, primarily from arid and semi-arid areas as well as city slums.

The ministry’s assurance aimed to alleviate concerns about potential disruptions to the program despite the budget cuts.
