A Siaya court has sentenced George Oluoch Awiti, also known as Abdul Bnajib Mohamed, to 20 years in prison for his involvement in terrorist activities under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2022.
Senior Principal Magistrate Lseter Simiyu convicted Awiti on multiple charges, including being a member of a terrorist organization, collecting terrorism-related information, and possessing materials linked to terrorist acts.
On Thursday, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) announced that the sentencing followed a robust presentation by its legal team.
Prosecutor Soita Evans China and his team presented compelling evidence, which included testimonies from three key witnesses and forensic analysis of Awiti’s mobile phone, SIM card, and a compact disk containing extremist content.
The evidence revealed that the recordings included audio and video materials portraying figures like Aboud Rogo and Osama Bin Laden as martyrs.
Additionally, the extremist content promoted jihad in Somalia and incited rebellion against the Kenyan government. It also offered rewards for those participating in jihad and urged patience among prisoners.
“After examining the evidence and considering the submissions, Magistrate Simiyu found Awiti guilty on all charges,” the ODPP stated.
Awiti received a 10-year sentence for each of the charges: membership in a terrorist group, collecting terrorism-related information, and possession of related articles.
However, the sentences for the second and third charges will be served concurrently, resulting in a total imprisonment term of 20 years.
