South Africa: Hawks Seek Help In Identifying Suspects After G4S Security Guards Are Robbed In Limpopo

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in Limpopo is seeking public assistance to identify suspected armed robbers, seen in photographs after G4S security guards were robbed.

Hawks spokesperson in Limpopo, Lieutenant Colonel Matimba Maluleke said on Tuesday morning, G4S security guards were collecting money from the Global filling station at Big Boy shopping complex in Ga-Masemola.

“They were allegedly ambushed by three unknown men who were armed with firearms. It is further alleged that the suspects pointed the crew with firearms and took the money bag with an undisclosed cash amount from the security guards before fleeing the scene,” Maluleke.

Earlier, police in Limpopo announced that they have arrested four suspects and linked them to about 20 cases of housebreaking and theft which occurred at farms in the Westenburg policing area.

Meanwhile, a 51-year-old Cape Town police Colonel is in stable condition at a local hospital after suspects opened fire at police who responded to a robbery in Mnixi Street, Nyanga, on Friday.

Western Cape police spokesperson Andrè Traut said the officer was shot in the leg.

He and three of his colleagues were doing crime prevention patrols in Browns Farm at around 15:50 when they were alerted of an armed robbery on Mnixi Street.

“They immediately responded and approached the beverage delivery vehicle, which was the target of the robbery. Upon arriving at the crime scene, the suspects fled on foot with police in pursuit,” Traut said.

According to police, one of the suspects opened fire at the police members and wounded the Colonel.

The 38-year-old suspect was subsequently chased by police, where he was arrested and disarmed.

“The other suspects managed to evade arrest and are being sought,” Traut added.

The arrested suspect is scheduled to make his court appearance in Athlone on charges of attempted murder, possessing an unlicensed firearm, and armed robbery.

The wounded member was admitted to hospital, and he is currently in stable condition,” Traut said.

Police have issued a stern warning to criminals who attack SAPS members.

SAPS will not tolerate an attack on our members. We will use all our resources to bring perpetrators to book so that they can face the consequences in a court of law,” Traut added.

And police at Mokwakwaila, Limpopo, are investigating the murder of a 24-year-old man following a mob attack.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said some of the residents of Pelana Village allegedly used various objects to severely assault the 24-year-old man until he died.

“It is reported that police received an alert about community members who were assaulting a person at the said village. They, together with emergency personnel, quickly rushed to the scene and found the victim lying in a pool of blood, with severe injuries,” Ledwaba said.

The victim was taken to hospital where he died on arrival.

He was identified by police as Tshepo Mafa from Ga-Kuranta Village.

“The reason behind his attack and subsequent killing is still not clear at this stage but further police investigations will reveal, (the motive),” said Ledwaba.

Acting Provincial Police Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers has once again warned community members against the vigilante behavior that persists in parts of the province.
