The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) has suspended the online operations of Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) for a period of 30 days, citing the publication of “prohibited content.”
As a result, several of MCL’s platforms, including The Citizen, Mwananchi Digital, Mwananchi, and Mwanaspoti, will be inaccessible online during this period.
TCRA, the government agency responsible for overseeing communications in the country, accused MCL of violating Regulation 16 by publishing content that allegedly poses a threat to national unity and social harmony.
According to TCRA Director General Jabiri Bakari, the prohibited audio-visual material was posted on October 1, 2024, on various social media platforms.
In response to the suspension, MCL issued a public statement across its websites and social media channels, expressing its regret over the situation and assuring its audience that the company is engaging with the government to resolve the matter.
“We regret to inform our esteemed audiences that we shall be ceasing publication across all our online media platforms with immediate effect due to TCRA suspending all our online media services licenses for 30 days, citing the publication of prohibited content that violates the electronics postal communications (online content) regulations, 2020,” the statement read.
This is not the first time MCL has faced such action. In 2020, TCRA suspended The Citizen for six months after it posted a leaked video of former President John Magufuli at a crowded fish market during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The suspension has sparked concern over media freedom and raised questions about the balance between regulation and the public’s right to access information.
MCL’s platforms will remain offline for the next month as the media house works to address the regulatory body’s concerns.
