A recent crackdown on a counterfeiting operation in Nakuru has led to the arrest of three suspects involved in producing and distributing fake alcoholic spirits.
A joint task force, comprising officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Nakuru County Investigations Office, and the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Enforcement Unit, raided a hidden warehouse along Print Press Road in Nakuru’s industrial area, where they uncovered a counterfeit alcohol production setup.
Authorities seized a substantial amount of contraband, including 60 sacks filled with bottle caps enough to produce thousands of fake spirit bottles alongside two and a half drums of ethanol, a key component in the production of illicit liquor.
Additionally, a plastic molding machine and labels for popular alcohol brands were found, meticulously crafted to deceive consumers into believing they were purchasing genuine products.
The suspects, identified as Mary Mugure, Peter Macharia, and Vincent Kibagendi, were arrested at the site.
According to sources, the trio had been operating this illegal venture undetected for months, flooding the market with counterfeit spirits that pose significant health risks to consumers.
All seized items have been securely transported to the KRA warehouse for further examination.
Meanwhile, the suspects are in custody, awaiting court arraignment.
If found guilty, they face hefty penalties under Kenya’s anti-counterfeiting laws.
As the investigation progresses, authorities urge the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activities linked to counterfeit goods.
