Today marks the beginning of a three-day national mourning period to honor the victims of the Hillside Academy tragedy, as declared by President William Ruto on Friday.
Throughout this period, the Kenyan national flag and the East African Community flag will be flown at half-mast at the State House,
Kenyan diplomatic missions, public buildings, military bases, naval vessels, and throughout the entire country.
This period of mourning coincides with ongoing efforts to locate missing students from the fire that devastated Hillside Academy on the night of September 5.
At least 21 students have been confirmed dead, and postmortem examinations are scheduled to begin today.
In a separate development, Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli is expected in court today to address his failure to comply with previous court orders regarding the disappearance of three men in Kitengela.
Last week, a judge postponed proceedings after activists disrupted the court session.
If Masengeli does not attend today, it will mark his fourth absence from court.
On August 28, Judge Mugambi had ordered the Inspector General of Police,
Director of Public Prosecutions, Attorney General, Director of Criminal Investigations, and the National Intelligence Service to reveal the whereabouts of Bob Micheni,
Jamil Longton, and Aslam Longton to the Law Society of Kenya, which filed the case.
