Tensions are escalating in Kamagut village, Uasin Gishu county, after four young men were fatally shot, causing an outcry among residents.
The incident unfolded when the victims, seeking to harvest maize, allegedly trespassed on farms believed to be owned by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
Expressing their discontent, locals condemned what they deemed senseless killings of individuals striving to make a living.
The deceased were reportedly shot by KDF soldiers, prompting an immediate uproar in the community.
Three bodies were discovered on the farm, while the fourth succumbed to injuries during hospital treatment.
Residents voiced their concerns, suggesting that the KDF had used excessive force.
They called for a peaceful conflict resolution mechanism and urged the army to engage with the community.
The incident echoes a similar tragedy from two years ago when two villagers were allegedly gunned down by KDF officers on the same farm, with no apparent accountability.
Paul Yego, a resident, expressed the community’s shock, stating, “We woke up to the surprising news that we have lost four of our young people, and others are in the hospital, all because of this company called Kenya Ordinance Factories.”
Benjamin Lagat, a victim’s father, explained, “They harvest with machines, and our young people were just picking leftovers after the machine passed.”
Turbo Deputy County Commissioner Charles Igiha acknowledged the incident, saying, “An event occurred on the military farm.
It is said they had gone to harvest maize on the military farm and were attacked by security guards.”
MP Julius Ruto emphasized the need for dialogue between the community and KDF to establish peaceful coexistence.
“What has happened is regrettable,” Ruto stated.
A committee, comprising police officers and community members, has been formed to investigate the circumstances leading to the fatal shootings.
The injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment at the Eldoret Referral Hospital.
The community remains hopeful for a resolution and a commitment to preventing such incidents in the future.
