The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two Kenya Forest Service officers in Garissa as part of a crackdown on a suspected fraud syndicate.
The operation also recovered Sh73,000, allegedly collected in a single day through corrupt practices.
The suspects, identified as Elphas Wesonga, a Conservator, and Ibrahim Hussein, an accountant, are accused of orchestrating a scheme in which they overpaid casual workers and then demanded that the excess funds be returned for their personal use.
According to the EACC, the officials deposited inflated payments into the workers’ bank accounts under the guise of legitimate wages, only to later instruct the employees to withdraw and hand over the extra money.
“The officials have been depositing funds into casual workers’ accounts as if they were legitimate payments, then ordering the workers to withdraw and surrender the overpaid amounts,” the EACC said in a statement.
The anti-graft agency also reported that the money collected through the scheme was allegedly shared among the officers and their senior colleagues.
The two suspects were processed at the EACC North Eastern Regional Offices in Garissa and later booked at Garissa Police Station for further investigation.
The EACC continues to probe the syndicate and has pledged to take further action against those involved.
