A 26-year-old woman was found dead after she had died by suicide in her room in Akiba estate, Nairobi.
Jelagat Kiprono is said to have locked herself in her bedroom before hanging herself.

The motive of the incident is yet to be known.

The body was discovered Wednesday evening hours after she had locked herself there and had refused to respond to calls and texts.

Her elder sister sensed something was wrong and alerted security at the estate who later discovered the woman was dead.

Police were called to the scene and helped to move the body to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

Two other suicide cases were reported in Kitui and Kisii Counties, police said.

In Kitui’s Kyethani location, the body of David Nzoka, 59 was found after he had hanged himself on a tree using a manila rope on the outskirts of Karura shopping center.

Police said the body, which had no visible physical injuries, was removed to the mortuary awaiting postmortem.
No suicide note was recovered and the motive is yet to be established.

In Kisii’s Menyinkwa area, Nyaura sub-location, the body of James Aminga, 33 was found hanging on roof rafters inside the bedroom of his semi-permanent house with a manila string tied around his neck.

Police said no suicide note was recovered and the body was moved to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.

Suicide cases have been on the rise amid calls for urgent action to address them.

There were 174 cases of suicide reported in 2020 as compared to 196 in 2019, 302 in 2018, 421 in 2017 and 302 in 2016. The majority of the victims were male, police reports say.

Police say the trend has been worrying and increasing as up to two cases are reported daily.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.
