A visit to a detained boyfriend instead landed a 26-year-old woman in police custody, after officers manning Buruburu Police Station’s report office desk discovered bhang hidden inside a loaf of bread.
According to the police, Bernice Achieng had come to see her boyfriend, currently held in police custody, and asked officers to pass him the loaf.
But the unsealed package raised suspicion and upon search, five rolls of bhang and a matchbox were discovered buried deep in the loaf of bread.
The find prompted a further search, turning up a further seven rolls of bhang stuffed in the pocket of her jacket, making it twelve rolls in total recovered.
Achieng was detained in custody with the exhibits secured and is expected to be arraigned.
Police said they are investigating if the woman is a regular peddler.
This came days after a similar attempt to deliver a plier to a suspect in custody at the Ruai police station was thwarted.
The woman who was delivering the pliers concealed in a pack of rice was arrested.
Elsewhere in Thika, a drug peddler is in police custody after a high-speed motorcycle chase through Kairi, Thika West, ended in a crash, and over 300 rolls of bhang were recovered from his possession.
The suspect and his female pillion passenger spotted a police roadblock. Sensing trouble, the duo gunned the engine in a desperate bid to vanish.
But fate had other plans. Near Ree Supermarket, the rider misjudged a speed bump, and the motorcycle got out of control leading to a crash. In the chaos, his female pillion passenger melted into the crowd and slipped away.
The rider John Mwangi, alias “Bombay,” was not as fortunate and was arrested on the spot.
A search of his cargo led to the recovery of 300 rolls of bhang, plus another three kilograms wrapped tightly in yellow polythene and strapped to the seat.
Mwangi is in custody at Kimuchu Police Station undergoing processing pending arraignment.
