Nairobi Governor, Johnson Sakaja, took a significant step on Monday by launching 10 new skip loaders and skips to improve garbage collection in the county.
The event, held at City Hall, marked a crucial initiative in Sakaja’s broader vision to clean up the city, and he expressed confidence that these trucks would play a vital role in achieving that goal.
Sakaja emphasized the impact of this equipment on maintaining a clean environment, stating, “This equipment will go a long way to ensuring garbage is collected, and we keep our environment clean.”
Each skip loader is set to be paired with five skips (containers), resulting in a total of 50 skips, marking the largest procurement in recent years.
These skips will be strategically placed in markets and areas with high garbage accumulation across the county, forming part of the equipment acquired for the Green Nairobi sector.
The efforts to enhance waste management also include the delivery of 27 tippers, with an additional 24 refuse compactors anticipated early next year.
These acquisitions signify a comprehensive approach to address the growing garbage issue in Nairobi.
In parallel, a team of 2,500 youth, known as the Green Army, has been enlisted to actively participate in the city’s cleaning initiatives, focusing on unblocking drainages and maintaining a cleaner environment.
Furthermore, plans are in place to hire an additional 1,500 youth to expand the Green Army team, contributing to the overall mission of transforming Nairobi into a greener and more sustainable city.
