Ababu Namwamba Launches 2024 World Rally Championship

Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Ababu Namwamba, has officially started the 2024 World Rally Championship, set to run from March 29th to March 31st this year.

During the launch event, Ababu showed his excitement for the rally, which has attracted over 100 local and international drivers, emphasizing its importance in showcasing Kenya’s prowess in global sports.

We’re looking forward to a rally that truly represents Kenya. This year, we expect to see more Kenyan drivers, moving away from previous editions where foreign drivers dominated,” said Ababu.

In a noticeable change, the rally will now happen during the Easter period instead of its usual June time.

Ababu explained that this decision aims to maximize attendance by taking advantage of the holiday season.

“The change in timing was a strategic decision to ensure more fans can attend, especially during the holiday when many people have the opportunity to join,” Ababu explained.

Paul Russo, CEO of KCB Bank, emphasized the bank’s significant sponsorship of 195 million for the tournament, with the winner set to receive an impressive prize of 95 million.

“We’ve increased our contribution by an additional 95 million this year, up from 100 million last year.

This demonstrates the bank’s dedication not only to supporting WRC but also sports in general,” Russo stated.
