Crackdown On Counterfeit Maize Seeds In Nakuru, One Arrest Made

Authorities in Nakuru have apprehended a suspect believed to be involved in the production and distribution of counterfeit maize seeds across Nakuru, Kericho, and Bomet counties.

During a joint operation involving detectives from the criminal investigating department and the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), a significant haul of fake maize seeds and related packaging materials was seized from a timber yard in Njoro, Nakuru County.

A total of 34,780 packets of counterfeit packaging bags, along with 18 bags of maize seeds and 6,605 fake sticker labels, were confiscated.

The suspect, identified as Stephen Gicharu, is alleged to have been engaged in this illicit trade for an extended period, potentially earning up to sh.13 million in the process.

Nakuru County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara emphasized the substantial value of the confiscated items, stating,

“The combined street value of the confiscated packaging bags, maize seeds, and counterfeit sticker labels amount to Ksh.13 million. All of which is tax-free.”

In response to the incident, KEPHIS has issued a warning to farmers in the region, urging them to exercise caution and remain vigilant against counterfeit seeds, particularly during the planting season.

“Farmers need to be extra vigilant since these counterfeits can easily pass as genuine seeds to an untrained eye,” remarked KEPHIS Acting Managing Director Simon Maina.

Authorities are continuing their efforts to crack down on the production and distribution of fake agricultural products, ensuring the protection of farmers and the integrity of the agricultural sector.
