Kenyans In Washington Rally Against IMF’s Economic Influence

A group of Kenyans assembled outside the International Monetary Fund (IMF) headquarters in Washington, D.C., to protest what they described as significant economic interference due to IMF-imposed austerity measures in Kenya.

On Saturday, protesters from Washington, Maryland, and Virginia voiced their displeasure, chanting anti-government slogans.

They accused the IMF of ignoring the adverse effects of the loans, which they claimed had resulted in loss of life.

The demonstrators displayed the names of individuals who died during protests, allegedly due to excessive police force.

They called on the IMF to take full responsibility for the deaths and injuries by compensating the affected families.

On July 12, the IMF issued an apology to Kenyans impacted by the anti-government protests, which led the government to abandon the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

During a press briefing, IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack expressed “deepest sympathy” to the youth who had lost loved ones or were injured during the protests.

Kozack also defended the IMF’s actions, responding to criticism from Kenyans who accused the Fund of imposing harsh conditions for financial assistance.

She stated that the IMF’s goal is to help Kenya achieve sustainable growth, create jobs for its young population, and support programs for the less fortunate.

Currently, Kenya has received Sh.503 billion from the IMF to address its economic challenges.
