Speaker Amason Kingi has called on Senators to avoid making public comments regarding the impeachment case against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during the ongoing proceedings in the Senate.
This request comes as the Senate prepares to address the serious allegations leveled against Gachagua, which could have significant implications for his political future.
“While this impeachment process is underway, I caution Honourable Senators to avoid making public comments regarding the merits or demerits of the impeachment motion,” Kingi stated.
He underscored the importance of maintaining an unbiased environment during this critical period.
Kingi stressed that any public statements made about the impeachment could preempt the debate, which would be a violation of Standing Order 99 of the Senate Standing Orders.
He further elaborated, saying, “To clarify, any public remarks whether written or spoken about the Deputy President’s conduct or the impeachment process outside of the formal proceedings will be considered grossly disorderly conduct as defined by Standing Order 122.
Such comments could compromise the integrity of the process and potentially prejudice its outcome.”
This warning from the Speaker highlights the Senate’s commitment to ensuring a fair and orderly impeachment process.
Gachagua is set to defend himself before the Senate plenary, with the investigation into the charges scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
As Senators prepare for this pivotal moment, Kingi’s reminder serves as a crucial guideline for maintaining decorum and upholding the principles of justice within the Senate.
The outcome of these proceedings will not only determine Gachagua’s political fate but also set a precedent for future impeachment cases in the country.
All eyes will be on the Senate as it navigates this complex and sensitive issue, underscoring the need for careful deliberation and adherence to established protocols.
