A 35-year-old MPesa shop owner escaped with injuries after he was shot by suspected robbers in Namba-Kehancha Junction, Migori County, on Wednesday night.
According to police, the incident occurred on June 24, 2026, at about 10:35 p.m.
Police officers and National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) who responded to the scene established that the victim operates an MPesa shop at the busy trading centre.
Preliminary investigations indicate that two men approached the shop while the victim’s wife was attending to customers at the counter. The suspects reportedly sought to deposit Sh200,000, but the request was declined.
The two men walked away from the shop but remained nearby. Moments later, the victim reportedly stepped away from the premises, unaware that the suspects had not left the area.
It was at that point that one of the assailants allegedly opened fire, striking him and causing laceration injuries to his left hand.
The victim raised an alarm, attracting members of the public to the scene. Sensing danger, the attackers fled using an unmarked getaway vehicle or motorcycle and escaped towards the Masara area through feeder roads.
The victim was rushed to Lifecare Hospital in Migori, where he was treated and later discharged in fair condition.
Police said nothing was stolen during the incident. Officers who processed the scene did not recover any spent cartridge, complicating efforts to establish the type of firearm used.
Investigators have launched a manhunt for the attackers as inquiries into the motive behind the shooting continue.
Authorities suspect the incident may have been linked to an attempted robbery targeting the mobile money business.
The area has been experiencing a surge in armed crime amid police operations to address the same.
Police have deployed special teams to pursue the gangs behind the same.
