In Kazakhstan, a terrible accident has taken the lives of 45 coal miners.

It all began with an explosion caused by methane gas in a mine.

This tragic incident occurred at the Kostenko mine in the Karaganda region.

The Ministry for Emergency Situations made an official statement about this disaster.

The explosion happened early on a Saturday, and it led to a fire that engulfed the mine.

Thankfully, more than 200 people were safely evacuated from the mine.

However, the authorities are still searching for one miner who remains missing.

The mine belongs to ArcelorMittal, a large steel producer based in Luxembourg.

In Kazakhstan, it’s operated by their local representative, ArcelorMittal Temirtau, which manages various coal and iron ore mines across the country.

Following this devastating event, the company has suspended operations at its eight mines in the Karaganda region.

Additionally, a criminal investigation has been launched by the General Prosecutor’s Office.

ArcelorMittal released a statement expressing their commitment to transferring ownership of ArcelorMittal Temirtau to Kazakhstan.

They aim to do this swiftly, working with the Kazakh government.

Their focus is on what’s best for the workers at the steel plant, iron ore, and coal mines, as well as the communities that depend on these operations for support.

To honor the memory of those who lost their lives, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev declared a national day of mourning in Kazakhstan.

It’s important to note that the mining sector is a significant part of Kazakhstan’s economy.

In 2021, it made up about 17% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the US International Trade Administration.

This highlights the importance of mine safety and the tragic consequences when accidents like this occur.
