Human rights activist Bonface Mwangi has disclosed that he faced a profound personal crisis a month ago, contemplating suicide.
In a heartfelt message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mwangi, known for his outspoken activism against President Ruto’s administration, described a period of intense despair where suicide seemed like the only escape.
Mwangi revealed that by August 3, 2024, he had reached a breaking point, marked by preparing his will and making final farewells to close friends and family.
“I found myself in a dark place and seriously considered ending my life,” he wrote.
“A few days earlier, I had signed my will and reached out to some people for my last goodbyes. I was ready to leave this world forever.”
The activist attributed his suicidal thoughts to the intense emotional strain caused by the violent crackdown on protesters.
“The bloodshed and suffering of young people protesting against the government left me in agony.
The pain and trauma were overwhelming, and I could no longer bear to watch the violence against innocent citizens,” he explained.
Despite his grave intentions, Mwangi’s family intervened, offering crucial support and encouraging him to seek professional help.
Their intervention led him to undergo treatment and mental health counseling, which played a pivotal role in his recovery.
A month after his disappearance from social media, Mwangi has made a comeback, expressing gratitude for the support he received.
“Although I was in a dark place, the love and compassion from my family and friends helped me reconsider,” he said.
“They encouraged me to seek professional help and take a medical break to focus on my mental health.”
Now in a more stable mental state, Mwangi reflects on his renewed outlook on life.
“I have found a new sense of purpose and am deeply thankful for the support that helped me through that dark time,” he concluded.
