Tensions flared in Kipkerieny village, Kericho County, during the burial of former Member of County Assembly Jones Kiplagat Mutai, as political disagreements arose over the impeachment of Governor Erick Mutai.
According to attendees, the unrest was triggered when Nominated MCA Dora Keino voiced her support for the impeachment, inciting anger among Governor Mutai’s backers.
This disruption led to interruptions of speeches from MCAs advocating for the impeachment.
Religious leaders present at the burial urged local officials to promote peace and maintain respect during such solemn occasions.
The impeachment proceedings against Governor Mutai are set to take center stage in the Senate on Monday and Tuesday, where Senators will decide whether to uphold the motion or offer the beleaguered Governor another chance.
The impeachment motion, introduced by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, was passed last week with the backing of 31 members.
It includes serious allegations of gross constitutional violations, abuse of office, and misuse of public resources.
Senators will review the impeachment motion in a plenary session, having rejected a proposal by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to form a special investigative committee.
This proposal failed to gain traction after Nominated Senator Veronica Maina declined to second it.
Speaker Amason Kingi subsequently announced that the hearing for the impeachment motion will take place on October 14-15, 2024.
