Colombian Football Federation Head And Son Arrested On Battery Charges

Ramón Jesurún, the head of the Colombian Football Federation, along with his son, Ramón Jamil, were arrested following an altercation at the Copa América final in Miami on Sunday.

According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, both individuals are facing charges of battery involving an official or employee.

The incident took place after Colombia’s 0-1 loss to Argentina in extra time.

The Miami-Dade Police Department’s statement to the BBC revealed that the altercation occurred shortly after the match concluded at Hard Rock Stadium.

Mr. Jesurún and his son were reportedly “walking towards the entrance of the field” when they became “irate and began shouting” at a security officer.

The officer had been instructed to temporarily delay people from proceeding further.

The police report states that the officer “placed an open palm” on Ramón Jamil’s chest to guide him back.

This action prompted Mr. Jesurún to push the officer, while his son allegedly grabbed the officer’s neck, pulled him to the ground, and proceeded to punch and kick him in the head.

Additionally, Ramón Jamil reportedly grabbed and pushed a female official who attempted to intervene and punched a security manager.

It is believed that Mr. Jesurún, his son, and other family members were trying to enter the pitch to participate in the awards ceremony.

Neither Mr. Jesurún nor his son has publicly commented on the incident, and the Colombian Football Federation has also refrained from making any statements.

The final of the Copa América, South America’s most prestigious football tournament, was delayed by 80 minutes due to ticketless fans forcing their way into the stadium.

Several arrests were made following clashes with police and security personnel, and some supporters required medical attention from paramedics.
