Popular comedian Timothy Kimani, famously known as Njugush, made waves in the transportation sector as he boldly entered the matatu industry by introducing his very own matatu, christened ‘Tugi,’ named after his firstborn son.
The unveiling of the 36-seater matatu took place on April 13, showcasing an extravagant interior, with Njugush taking the wheel for its maiden voyage.
In an exclusive conversation with media, Njugush conveyed his unwavering confidence in his decision to venture into the matatu business.
His newly acquired vehicle is registered under the Super Metro Sacco, serving commuters along the Rongai route.
“The idea to venture into the matatu industry stemmed from a training I attended a few months back, where they discussed converting liabilities into viable business opportunities. With the notion of selling my car looming, it seemed like the perfect decision,” shared Njugush.
Reflecting on the journey from high school to his current entrepreneurial endeavor, Njugush emphasized the potential for success in any hustle, drawing inspiration from individuals who started as makangas and gradually ascended to become drivers.
Njugush elaborated on his choice to align with a Sacco, citing the convenience it offers in managing the operations.
“Having someone manage it for me was essential. Entrusting my vehicle to a Sacco streamlines the process, from securing a driver to ensuring discipline is maintained,” he explained.
The acquisition of ‘Tugi’ was funded through the sale of Njugush’s Toyota Prado TX, a decision influenced by his close friend Abel Mutua, who humorously referred to the car as a “wardrobe.”
The well-maintained 2014 model, boasting a sunroof and leather seats, was subsequently listed for sale.
Revealing the substantial investment, Njugush disclosed that the total expenses exceeded Sh8 million, covering not only the acquisition but also the customization of the matatu.
A month into operations, Njugush expressed satisfaction with ‘Tugi’s’ performance, citing positive feedback and customer satisfaction as indicators of success.
While declining to disclose specific earnings, he affirmed that the matatu is meeting expenses and generating profit.
Moreover, ‘Tugi’ has garnered attention beyond Nairobi, being hired for events over the weekends, further bolstering its success.
Looking ahead, Njugush hinted at aspirations for expansion, expressing his desire to add more vehicles to his fleet in the near future.
