Detectives are investigating the discovery of a loaded pistol that had been abandoned behind Githiga Police Station, Githunguri, Kiambu County.

According to police, the discovery was made by a local working as a Community Service Officer (CSO) at the Chief’s office.

The man was clearing bushes behind the station when he noticed a suspicious blue plastic bag hidden in the thicket.

He opened the bag and was shocked to find a pistol inside.

He rushed to the station’s report office and informed the officers on duty.

The recovered firearm was identified as a Jericho pistol, belonging to Kenya police.

It was found loaded with 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition and showed signs of partial rusting and exposure to mud, indicating it may have been abandoned for some time, the police said.

Preliminary checks linked the firearm to a previous police report filed at Limuru Police Station.

It had been listed in a police communication dated February 16, 2025.

It was taken for forensic analysis.

Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine how the weapon ended up near a police facility and whether it is connected to any recent criminal activities in the region.

Cases where police are involved in crime are on the rise amid reaction from authorities that they are isolated.

Last week, a police officer attached to the DCI Starehe was arrested after two women were linked to a pistol whose picture had been posted in their WhatsApp status in Nyando, Kisumu county

Police said after their arrests, the women claimed the Canik pistol belonged to the officer who was at work then.

One of the women had posted a photo of the pistol on her WhatsApp status to boast saying none can touch her.

Detectives from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, Nyanza Region, in collaboration with their DCI counterparts from Nyando swung into action and arrested Sharon Auma and Nancy Atieno Obura and recovered the Canik pistol in their possession.

The arrest on Tuesday April 15 follows a report received of Sharon Auma, who decided to spice up her WhatsApp status, posting a photo of herself brandishing a pistol while ominously warning that any man who dared dump her would face severe consequences.

Responding swiftly, the hawk-eyed detectives swooped into Awasi town and apprehended Sharon.

Upon questioning, she led officers to a rented two-bedroom house belonging to her friend, and now co-accused, Nancy Atieno Obura.

A thorough search of the house turned up the pistol in question, with an empty magazine, cleverly wrapped in clothes and stashed in a basin under the bed.

Also recovered is a fake motorcycle number plate bearing the number KMGG 805M.

Both suspects were detained pending arraignment, as detectives pursue more leads to arrest more suspects in connection to the firearm.

It was then the women told police the weapon was taken to them by the DCI cop who was almost 400 kilometers away.

He was traced and arrested before being driven to Nyando pending arraignment.
