Tragedy struck central Johannesburg on a fateful Thursday as a devastating fire razed a five-story building, resulting in the loss of more than 50 lives, according to officials from the city’s emergency services.
The blaze left behind a grim trail of casualties, with numerous individuals sustaining injuries, many grappling with the effects of smoke inhalation.
Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, affirmed that these injured individuals were expeditiously transported to nearby medical facilities for essential treatment.
Providing insights into the situation, Mulaudzi stated, “We have so far accounted for 52 individuals who have tragically lost their lives, and an additional 43 individuals who have fortunately sustained minor injuries,” as he conveyed the information to local broadcaster ENCA.
Firefighters promptly arrived at the scene, diligently extinguishing the flames.
The area also saw relentless search and recovery missions being carried out by dedicated personnel.
Mulaudzi elaborated on the ongoing efforts, sharing, “We are meticulously progressing through each floor as we proceed with the solemn task of recovering the deceased.”
He somberly acknowledged that the death toll was anticipated to witness an unfortunate increase as operations continued.
