The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has called upon Mumias East Member of Parliament to address allegations of assaulting Malaha-Isongo-Makunga MCA, Peter Walunya Indimuli, during a funeral service last week.
CEO Twalib Mbarak issued the summons on January 16, directing the MP to appear at the commission’s offices on Tuesday next week to provide a statement regarding the incident.
“The commission is in receipt of an allegation that you assaulted Hon. Peter Walunya Indimuli, the Member of County Assembly Malaha-Isongo-Makunga Ward during a funeral service in Mumias East, Kakamega on Friday 12th January 2024,” Mbarak stated.
“To this end, you are required to appear at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission’s offices at Integrity Centre, Nairobi, on Tuesday 23rd January 2024 at 09:00 am for an interview and statement recording.”
Mbarak emphasized that the MP’s alleged actions were a serious breach of integrity and ethical requirements. He mentioned that the lawmaker would face charges if found guilty.
“Our officers Michael Ngare and Sylvester Mango will be available to receive you and record your statement,” Mbarak added.
The commission highlighted that public officers must conduct themselves ethically and with integrity in their service to citizens.
“The commission notes that these allegations constitute serious ethical issues and if true would amount to a serious breach of the integrity and ethical requirements governing the conduct of State officers as laid out under Chapter Six of the Constitution and the Leadership and Integrity Act, 2012,” Mbarak stated.
“The commission has launched investigations into the matter with a view to taking appropriate action in line with our mandate under the law.”
A viral video captured the controversial lawmaker physically assaulting MCA Indimuli during the funeral service.
Chaos ensued after the MP urged the MCA to sit down for him to continue his address, but the MCA did not comply, leading to the MP slapping him in broad daylight.
Following the incident and public outrage, Salasya was arrested, brought to court, and released on a Sh.50,000 bond after pleading not guilty to the charges.
