Retired Police Commissioner Michael Mbugua, along with Christopher Njau Mbugua and Charles Kinyanjui Mbugua, have been accused of killing a farmhand named George Njui over a dispute involving a Sh.1,000 wire mesh.
The incident occurred on December 23rd last year in Riruta, Dagoretti, Nairobi County, and the trio appeared before Justice Kanyi Kimondo to face charges.
All three defendants pleaded not guilty during the court hearing.
However, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) opposed their release on bail, expressing concerns that key witnesses were reluctant to cooperate due to fear of reprisals from the recently retired Commissioner Mbugua.

The court is set to decide on their bond eligibility on February 21st of this year.
The alleged crime took place at the residence of the first accused, who is both the biological father of the second accused and a foster parent to the third accused.
The DCI revealed that some crucial witnesses, who could identify Njau and Kinyanjui at a secondary scene, were hesitant to collaborate with investigators due to fear of the suspects.
Furthermore, the investigating officer informed the court that Mbugua had tampered with the CCTV footage capturing the events on the day of the incident at his home.
The court documents state, “Investigations from the DCI Photographic section have established that the CCTV footage at the home of the 1st Accused was tampered with before retrieval for investigation purposes.
A review of the footage revealed that only the events of December 23, 2023, the day of the incident, were conveniently deleted before being handed over to investigators.”
