Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken out in support of the proposed budget allocation for the upcoming fiscal year, defending the need for renovations within his office and residence.
According to the figures presented by a representative from Gachagua’s office during a parliamentary session, there are plans to allocate Sh.460.4 million towards the refurbishment of his Harambee Annex offices, with an additional Sh.660 million designated for the overhaul of his official residence in Karen.
Additionally, Sh.250 million is earmarked for combating alcohol and substance abuse.
In response to media reports, Njeri Rugene, head of Deputy Presidential Communication Service, clarified that the budget request includes Sh.300 million for renovations spanning the Harambee House Annex office, the Karen residence, and the official Mombasa residence.
She emphasized that neglect over the past 15 years has severely impacted living conditions, safety, and security in these locations.
Regarding vehicle procurement, Gachagua’s office has sought Sh.100 million, citing a decade-long reliance on outdated and refurbished vehicles which have proved costly to maintain, thus hindering service delivery.
During a session with the National Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security, the Deputy President’s representative, Patrick Mwangi, highlighted the escalating threat posed by alcohol and substance abuse to national security.
He underscored the collaborative efforts involving various offices, including that of the Spouse of the Deputy President, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, in addressing this pressing issue.
“The fight against alcohol and drug abuse has taken on a life of its own, with a significant correlation between reduction efforts and alcoholism control,” Mwangi stated before the committee.
