A group of rowdy youths raided a private tea estate in Belgut, Kericho County, and damaged property before stealing tea-picking machines.
The group of about 300 according to police was demonstrating the drowning of a local at the Ekaterra Jamii Tea Estate in the Belgut area.
The victim was crossing the Chemosit River with stolen tea leaves at the weekend when he drowned.
His body was found a few meters downstream after the incident.
Come on May 6 evening, a group of youth stormed the farm and attacked the police who were guarding it.
According to police, the youths who were armed with crude weapons were dispersed with bullets and tear gas canisters.
During the incident, a police vehicle and semi-permanent iron sheet structures used by the tea pickers were damaged while two hard drilling machines and two pruning machines were stolen.
Police later raided a home in the area and recovered one of the stolen pruning machines but the suspect managed to escape.
Police say they are investigating the incident with the aim of arresting the suspects behind the attack.
The farm says they are home to 34 superior and well-loved brands serving some of the world’s favorite brews and herbal infusions.
