Government Allocates Sh.38.8 Billion For Road Maintenance

The Kenya Roads Board (KRB) has announced the release of sh.38.8 billion for the upkeep of roads nationwide during the financial year 2023/2024.

According to a statement issued by the State corporation, the disbursement for the period of July to December 2023 marks an increase of sh.9.6 billion compared to the previous financial year’s allocation of sh.29.17 billion.

This boost in funding is expected to facilitate the maintenance of 54% of the road networks, covering a total of 53,799 kilometers across the country.

KRB Director General Rashid Mohamed emphasized that this increase would enable road agencies to effectively maintain roads nationwide and extend coverage.

He highlighted, “This financial year, the board, through the road agencies, will be maintaining 53,799 kilometers of road networks, representing 54% of the maintainable road network.”

The allocated funds will be distributed among various agencies within the Roads Ministry, including the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for maintenance of national park roads.

KeNHA will receive the largest share of sh.16.5 billion, closely followed by KeRRA with an allocation of Ksh.16.4 billion for national rural roads.

KURA, responsible for urban roads, will receive sh.5.4 billion, while KWS will get sh.363.36 million.

These funds, sourced from road maintenance levy and transit tolls, are intended for the implementation of road projects outlined in the Annual Public Roads Programme for the fiscal year 2023/2024, as explained by the KRB director.

Mohamed urged government agencies to uphold accountability and transparency in managing these funds.

He commended the agencies for their prudent financial management over the past three years and assured the public of transparent procurement processes and road works.

He stated, “Road agencies have shown improvement in accountability for road maintenance over the last three financial years.

Transparency, openness, and accountability, including public participation in financial matters, have been evident in drawing work plans by the respective road agencies.

There has been consistent utilization of road maintenance funds over the years.”

Furthermore, he emphasized the responsible use of funds, clear fiscal reporting, and fair and transparent procurement processes, ensuring that road works adhere to prescribed standards, specifications, and best practices.
