Police are hunting on a gang that raided a patrol base on Wednesday night and escaped with four rifles in Mbita, Homabay County.
The officers who were supposed to be on duty were not present when the incident happened on Wednesday night.
They went through a window at the office formally run by a chief and broke into a steel box that had the weapons escaping with them.
County commander Samson Kine said they initially escaped with three AK47 rifles and three G3 rifles.
The said thieves however dropped two of the rifles on the way as they escaped. The weapons were recovered Thursday by a searching team.
The Kipasi patrol base is usually manned by six officers.
Police authorities said Thursday they are investigating the circumstances under which the incident happened.
The search of the weapons is ongoing amid fears they will be used in committing crime.
In October last year, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of the Kenya Police Service Edward Mbugua directed that all police posts with less than six officers be closed and the officers deployed to the mother stations.
Mbugua said such officers were unable to provide services to the members of the public as expected.
The directive came just a day after unknown people raided Kirimon police post in Samburu Central and stole two G3 rifles together with two magazines loaded with a total of 40 rounds of ammunition.
The post had only four officers and at the time of the incident.
There are fears the weapons will be used in a deadly attack in the near future.
